THE STORY BEHIND

The late 1990s marked the beginning of the digital TV industry’s rise. The transition from analog to digital television was driven by the need for more efficient use of the radio spectrum, improved picture and sound quality, and the ability to offer additional channels and services. Advanced Digital Broadcast (ADB) was founded in 1995, and since then, it has been iteratively conquering European and North American markets. In 2002, the company entered the Italian retail market by presenting its brand i-CAN. Within the i-CAN product line, ADB aimed to create premium Wi-Fi broadband solutions. To meet strict deadlines, ADB decided to boost development capabilities by extending their in-house team with outsourced experts. The company engaged MobiDev to provide a dedicated team for frontend development of the first version of a cross-platform mobile application for home network control.

INDUSTRY CHALLENGES

By launching the i-CAN mobile application, ADB aimed to cover the customers’ key “pains” related to the IoT home network management, including an intricate parental control setup, navigating  complex network diagnostics, and providing a step-by-step guide for installing broadband devices.

HOW WE DELIVERED

1

Created a mobile app supporting clients existing hardware

The MobiDev team has developed the cross-platform application to smoothly interconnect with ADB hardware within the IoT network. Based on the existing backend, the dedicated developers built a cross-platform mobile application, available both for clients with iOS and Android smartphones and tablets.

2

Completed MVP & Phase 1 within strict deadlines

The project came with demanding development schedules comprising two phases. MobiDev initiated the process with the MVP development, accomplishing it in just 3.5 months. Then, we seamlessly transitioned into Phase 1 development. Consequently, within the next 4.5 months, Phase 1 was completed and ready for handover to the in-house team.

3

Leveraged React Native to fit the in-house team’s expertise

React Native was the preferred choice because it aligned perfectly with the expertise of the client’s in-house team, which would be responsible for post-Phase 1 development. Additionally, using React Native, the MobiDev team could build the app for iOS and Android simultaneously, using a single codebase, which was particularly helpful in terms of tight deadlines.

4

Provided smooth transfer of the project to the in-house team

Given that the MobiDev team was expected to hand over the project to the ADB in-house engineers upon successful completion of the MVP and Phase 1, we placed particular focus on the detailed project documentation. The documentation from a tech expert, a business analyst, and a quality assurance engineer facilitated a seamless transition of the project to the ADB in-house development team.

OUTCOMES

After 11 years of providing telecom services to Italian customers, i-CAN presented brand-new premium Wi-Fi broadband solutions in 2022. The company keeps upgrading its products and services, in particular in the arena of protecting its customers’ data.
