Case Study: Okadabooks, Award-Winning Bookstore & Reader
Okadabooks could be named "yet another reader app" if not for several facts. Fact #1: this app was designed for the African market, with the Client being a Nigerian. Fact #2: One of the main goals of Okadabooks is allowing aspiring African authors to publish their works in the ever growing store. It makes it easier to interact with authors across Africa. Fact #3: in 2013 this app won the Nigeria MTN Awards app challenge, which has only served as a proof of its importance for the market and practical value.
As of mid-2015, there are over 9,000 books available in the store. About 90% of them are provided free of charge, while the remainder is available for less than $1.00 each (via in-app purchases). It's a powerful educational resource available for Android and Windows Phone 8.0-8.1. In addition, there is a dedicated website.
- • First a user must create an account (email/password), or simply link a Facebook account to Okadabooks.
- • Language: currently only English.
- • A bookstore with easy search and filters (New, Bestsellers, Comic Books, Popular, and All).
- • A simple reader.
- • Reset feature that deletes all downloaded books, cache and preferences.
- • MvvmCross Framework
- • Push Notifications
- • Fluent Lib
- • SQLite.NET-PCL
- • Backend: Yii framework + MobiDev Backvendor (our own Yii extension) + MySQL + Bootstrap
RESULTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS
The development of Okadabooks was distinguished by joined involvement of a multinational team from Africa, Asia, and Europe. Ours was the major bulk of the works, from the UI part to web services to QA to code reviews together with the Client. Not only did we built a great piece of software, but also managed to organize seamless collaboration between all parties.
As for the functionality, we'd already had experience by then, with the eBook Reader app, which as well combined a reader and a store. Our task was making a minimalist app with maximum convenience and functionality for an average reader – and we did it. What's more, it has become a great showcase of our Windows Phone skills.
